NOTE: make sure to preheat your oven to 350 degrees.
Get started by mixing your butter and sugar thoroughly. This stand mixer is super awesome for mixing them together.
We also like to use this one if we are looking for something small and compact. It’s not too expensive, works well and has been running for a long time.
Add your butter and sugar to your mixing bowl. Make sure your butter is softened. You can do this by setting it out on the counter for a bit before starting.
Beat the two items together. Running the mixer on high for just a few minutes should accomplish this. You basically just want them completely mixed with no big butter chunks.
The second step is to add in your other wet ingredients. These will be the eggs and vanilla extract.
Using the medium setting on your stand mixer, fold the eggs and vanilla into your butter and sugar. It should only take a minute or two for these items to be thoroughly combined. Make sure not to overmix.
The third step will be to get all of your dry ingredients together. Grab your baking soda, salt, and flour and add them to a separate bowl. Gently stir the three items together until they are mixed completely.
Now we’re going to get everything put all together. Very slowly add your dry ingredients into your wet ingredients. If you add them too fast since they’re dry they tend to fly all over the place.
Now you need to get everything mixed together. You can do this either by hand with a spatula or with your stand mixer. If you use your stand mixer make sure that it’s on low so that your powder doesn’t fly everywhere.
The goal is to have everything totally mixed together, but without mixing it too long. So just do enough that it is completely mixed. Make sure to scrape any ingredients down off the side of the bowl.
Next up we’re going to add in our M&Ms. Take your M&Ms and dump them into your pre-made cookie dough. Once you have added your M&Ms go ahead and start to fold them into the dough. This is most easily done by hand. Again, make sure not to overmix. Do it just enough so that they are completely mixed into the other ingredients.
Almost done. Next we’re going to put the cookie dough onto the baking sheet. Make sure you’re using a non stick baking sheet or have already put a little bit of butter or nonstick cooking spray on it.
Using either a tablespoon or your hands take cookie dough out a little at a time. If you use about 1.5 tablespoons then your cookies should be sized just right!
Make sure that your cookie dough is packed well together. If they’re not packed enough together then your cookies will be too large and will not hold together well.
Put your baking sheet with your cookie dough on it into your preheated oven and set a timer for 8 minutes to start. Cook times will vary depending on your oven and altitude. 12 minutes is just perfect for the oven used here. Most cookies will be ready in 8 to 12 minute time frame.
Once the edges are lightly browned your cookies are ready to come out of the oven. Go ahead and pull them out and let them cool. Once cooled go ahead and enjoy!
